Profile
About: Squash Wise uses the game of squash as a medium for teaching sportsmanship as well as respect for volunteers, fellow students, opponents and oneself. Other goals of the program include: to surround students with academic tutors, coaches and positive role models to encourage all students to reach for their potential; to ensure high school graduation and community service involvement; and to create a safe, fun and constructive after-school environment for underserved youth.
Why We
Two of the GiveAndDate founders – one a runner and the other a former teacher – were first drawn to Baltimore SquashWise because it combines sports and academics to support underprivileged youth. This charity is young (only in its second season) but the momentum behind the program is growing, and we’re excited about its future. Baltimore SquashWise was founded in 2007 by a group of Baltimore and Boston-area squash players committed to making change in Baltimore. While SquashWise is the first combined squash and academic program of its kind in Baltimore, it builds on the Meadow Mill Athletic Club Foundation's programs teaching squash to over 200 students from the KIPP School and Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. SquashWise follows the successful model set forward by a dozen urban squash programs across the country, and it is supported by a large and active squash community in the Baltimore area. Executive Director, Abby Markoe says, “It gets kids engaged and it opens a lot of doors. It’s both a team sport and an individual sport, so in that setup you are teaching lessons across the board about honesty and integrity.” -Katherine Bilby
